The Los Angeles Electric Football League (LAEFL) kicked off season 26 at the Santa Monica Mall with the Coach Tate and his San Diego Chargers taking on Coach Mark Houghlin’s Buffalo Bills. Go ahead and place this up there with the other classic game these two coaches gave us. In that classic Coach Tate pulled out an overtime win with one second remaining.
In this classic both teams missed field goal attempts on their only possession of the half. Each team touched the ball once moving down field only to have settle for the field goal try. The Chargers moved the ball to start the second half only to punt after stalling to continue their drive. The Bills used a dump pass to OJ Simpson (yes that OJ) and he found a lane and slashed his way through the Chargers defense to find the end zone and the game’s first score. Extra point good Bills 7-0.
Chargers get the ball and again move the ball but are forced to punt. The bills get the ball and start a nice drive that ends in a punt, but only left 2 minutes in the game.
Dan Fouts not having his best game throwing the ball used his legs on the third down play that got them a much needed first down. Why Coach Tate didn’t call a time out then only he can tell you, as he let the clock run down to 17 seconds before snapping the ball. Dan Fouts went back to pass and found Wes Chandler open over the middle. Wes caught the ball and avoided the Bills Mark Kelso, then followed his blocks 68yds for the score! 10 seconds remain and San Diego says we are here for the win not the tie nor overtime! They line up and again have a wide open receiver, this time it’s John (JJ) Jefferson and Dan Fouts throws the ball behind him.
An onside kick is now needed for the Chargers to pull out a win. Rolf Benirschke placed down a prefect kick, but after two attempts the Bills recovered and the game ended 7-6 Buffalo.
This was the first Jamboree opening day game. The jamboree is usually where the coaches get together and hash out rules and finalize game days. This season we did something different and had a regular season game. The season officially begins March 7 at the Santa Monica Mall. The Chargers will be on a bye that week.
Writing for the Buzz, I’m Rastahaze and this is the LAEFL according to me.
