It started with a boom! James Brooks 95yd kickoff return and before you knew it the Chargers were up 6-0. The Oilers moved the ball downfield but came up short on their fourth down attempt and Dan Fouts wasted little time in taking advantage of the missed opportunity by the Oilers. Fouts hit Kellen Winslow for an 80yd pass and score another missed 2pt try had the score at 12-0 after the first quarter. The Oilers mounted another drive capping it off with their first score of the day a Warren Moon TD pass to cut the lead to 4 as they converted on their two point try. Sitting at 12-8 and playing a very good half the Chargers mounted another drive of their own and was capped off with Dan Fouts second TD pass of the day, Wes Chandler 8yds and Rolf Benirschke extra point gave the Chargers a 19-8 lead.
Warren Moon told Dan hold this, and on the last play of the half hit on his second TD pass of the game and the lead was now just 19-14 going into the half. Moon and the Oilers wasted little time in grabbing the lead as their first possession ended with a score to start the second half. San Diego turned the ball over on downs as the momentum has now switched over to the Oilers. Moon’s third TD pass put the Oilers up 26-19 to end the scoring in the third quarter.
Warren Moon’s fifth TD pass came early in the fourth quarter and that score seemed to take what life the Chargers had left out of them. Fouts turned the ball over trying to hit Winslow and the Oilers took a knee to end the game. Final score Oilers 32 Chargers 19.
After a hot start the Chargers cooled in the second half and the Oilers did the opposite, slow start hot finish. With the win the Oilers will be the top seed heading into the playoffs and could face the Chargers in the first round.
